Book Summary
Doctor of the Crucified People is a biography of Óscar Romero, the fourth archbishop of San Salvador, who was assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass. Romero was a vocal critic of the Salvadoran government and its military, which were responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians during the country's civil war.
The book begins by describing Romero's early life and education. Romero was born in 1917 to a poor family in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. He entered the seminary at the age of 13 and was ordained a priest in 1942. After serving in several parishes, Romero was appointed auxiliary bishop of San Salvador in 1970. In 1977, he was named archbishop of San Salvador.
As archbishop, Romero became a leading voice for the poor and oppressed in El Salvador. He spoke out against the government's human rights abuses and called for an end to the violence. Romero's sermons were often broadcast on radio and television, and he became a symbol of hope for many Salvadorans.
In 1980, Romero was assassinated by a right-wing death squad. His death sparked an international outcry and led to increased pressure on the Salvadoran government to end the civil war. Romero was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2015 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2018.
Doctor of the Crucified People is a powerful and moving account of Romero's life and ministry. It is a story of faith, hope, and courage in the face of oppression. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of El Salvador or in the life of one of the most important figures in the Catholic Church in the 20th century.
