Reverend Ike was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1935. He grew up in poverty and was often beaten by his father. At the age of 16, he ran away from home and joined the Army. After serving in the Army, he returned to Detroit and began working as a janitor. In 1959, he was ordained as a minister and founded the United Church of Christ.
Reverend Ike quickly became one of the most popular televangelists in the United States. He was known for his flamboyant style and his controversial sermons.
